Summarising the Text

This week for reading, my reading group, were asked to write a summary about our book, which is about protesting. Everyone in our group had a role or job to do, my job was to do the vocabulary list of words that we didn't understand. This is the summary, that my group and I wrote, based on the histories of new zealand, protesting, confrontations and other major events against the government, that have taken place in New Zealand, in the past years.

The history of New Zealand protesting started years ago. What were they protesting? One of the first New Zealand protests were between the Maori and Pakeha in 1881. Government were taking land for settlers - destroying fences to make way for new roads. The people of Parihaka used passive resistance to peacefully protest. The Women's Suffrage was a significant protest to New Zealand. Countries from all around the world in 1893, were discriminating and giving titles to women. It wasn’t an equal argument between men and women. Kate Sheppard was a brave woman who stood for her right and opinion. The petition had more than 500 pages and was signed by over 25,000 women.

Depression Riots 1932,  A lot of people were unemployed and struggling. That's what made people think that the government wasn’t providing them with enough help and that's what started the protest. As Marches became Riots, messages became violence. A few months passing ahead, unemployed men fought with policies and smashed shop windows.

Waltzing Matilda

In reading this week, we unpacked a very famous poem called Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson. We created the main ideas of the poem, so we could understand more about it. The main ideas included 3 details, to back up the poem. There were words we learnt. Some of them are waltzing, which means walking on foot, matilda which means swag bag and billabong, which means waterhole.
